Indications, usage, dosage and administration

Indications:

Therapy in conditions when the anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects of glucocorticoids are needed:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis,  systemic  lupus  erythematosus,  some  types  of vasculitis,  temporal  arteritis  and  periarteritis  nodosa,  sarcoidosis, bronchial asthma, ulcerative colitis, hemolytic anemia, granulocytopenia and severe allergy conditions including anaphylaxis.
  • Treatment against acute leukemia, lymphoma, cancer of the breast and prostate cancer.

Dosage:

  • The initial adult dosage: 5 – 60 mg daily, depending on the disease being treated, and is usually administered in 2 – 4 divided doses.
  • Children: 0.14 – 2 mg/kg daily or 4 – 60 mg/mdaily, administered in 4 divided doses.

Usage:

Oral administration.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the active substance or excipients.
  • Serious infection, except septic shock or tuberculous meningitis.
  • Viral, fungal, or tubercular skin infection.
  • Administration of live virus vaccines.

Adverse reactions

Prednisolone inhibition of gastric acid secretion and protection of the gastric mucosa.

Common: Insomnia, nervousness, increased appetite, indigestion, hirsutism, diabetes mellitus, arthralgia, cataracts, glaucoma, epistaxis.

Uncommon: Vertigo,  seizures,  psychoses,  pseudotumor cerebri, headache, mood swings, delirium, hallucinations, euphoria, edema, hypertension, acne, skin atrophy, bruising, hyperpigmentation, Cushing of syndrome, pituitary – adrenal axis suppression,  growth  suppression,  glucose  intolerance,  hypokalemia, alkalosis, amenorrhea, sodium and water retention, hyperglycemia, peptic ulcer, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, ulcerative esophagitis, pancreatitis, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, fractures, hypersensitivity reactions.

Precautions

  • Patients with osteoporosis, newly established anastomoses (intestine, blood vessel), psychosis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac insufficiency and growing individuals (children).
  • Systemic corticosteroids should be used cautiously in the elderly.
  • Acute adrenal insufficiency may occur with abrupt withdrawal after long-term therapy or with stress.
  • At high doses, interference with vaccination can occur.
  • Prednisolone STELLA 5 mg contains lactose. Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose – galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.
  • Pregnancy: Chronic maternal administration of systemic corticosteroids has been associated with a mild decrease in birth weight in human beings. High systemic doses of glucocorticoids may cause small risk for neonatal adrenal hypoplasia.
  • Lactation: Caution should be exercised when prednisolone is given to a nursing mother.
